Canandaigua Wine Walk, First Saturday of Every Month

Aug 24, 2010 – Canandaigua Wine Walk is already celebrating their second year of bringing Finger Lakes wine into the streets of Downtown. Every first Saturday of the month wine goers and shoppers are already marking the date for this event, many who come every month know what to expect; world class wine that is local, appearing at local merchants who offer art, shopping, and food.

“We wanted to expand the success of Canandaigua Wine Walk,” Don Stevens says, current president of the Downtown Canandaigua Merchant Association and co-founder of Wine Walk. “It was natural to bring in food tastings from local restaurants to add to the mix.”

The once a month event already gives incredible exposure to local merchants, including restaurants, but now consumers can get a taste of Canandaigua while sipping on Finger Lakes wine. Sean Craig from Pickering Pub says he is “Delighted to take part and have wine goers sample what is available on our menu.” Other restaurants such as Lumberyard Grille and Simply Crepes are involved, and more restaurants are sure to follow.

This doesn’t discourage wine tastings at the restaurants, some will offer food samples along with wine samples. Specialty food places are also jumping in to offer their mouth watering delights. Dolce Cupcakery from Pittsford will be featured in September’s 4th Wine Walk. “We heard so much about it,” owner Kristi Dellaria says, “what better way to have people try our cupcakes.” Other local specialty foods that are scheduled include Finger Lakes Farmstead Cheese, local pies, and jams and jellies.

Each Wine Walk event brings in an average of about three hundred people in the hours of 3-7 pm. To enjoy the event you can purchase any commemorative wine glass at any of the merchants participating for that month for $5 and have all the wine and food tastings.

The next Canandaigua Wine Walk is September 4th from 4-7pm with seven six Finger Lakes wineries and three food stops. For a list of participant merchants and wineries, go to http://www.downtowncanandaigua.com/events/winewalk/

Bristol Valley Theater, the central Finger Lakes live professional theater, concludes their all -comedy 2010 summer season with a trio of funny felons in Murderers, a comedy/mystery written by Jeffrey Hatcher, starting August 5 at the theater in Naples and running through August 15.

“Each of their homicidal histories has its own little twist,” said Karin Bowersock, Bristol Valley’s Artistic Director, “that will leave you laughing. But if I told you more, it wouldn’t be a mystery!”

The production will be directed by Suzi Takahashi. The cast, includes Robert Teasdale, Michelle Doucet (both from New York City) and Jane Bowman Jenkins of Watertown. Jenkins received the Theater Association of New York State’s Outstanding Performance Award for portraying the same role in a 2008 production. This production is sponsored by the Talking Phone Book, Canandaigua Quick Print and WARM Radio.

Performances run from August 5 – 15 at the theater at 151 S. Main Street in Naples. For reservations and further information, call the box office at 585 374-6318 or visit http://www.bvtnaples.org

26 Years of Vision, Leadership, Contribution and Recognition. The Canandaigua ATHENA Award program stands out across the U.S.

Canandaigua, NY. – In the twenty-six years since its founding, the Canandaigua ATHENA Award program has grown to be a national role model and thought leader for the more than 400 communities across the United States and in the eight countries of the world where the ATHENA program is held. This year, The Canandaigua Area Chamber of Commerce and the Professional Women of the Finger Lakes will celebrate their 26th Annual Canandaigua ATHENA award on Friday, November 19, 2010 at Bristol Harbour Resort.

How has a small community in the Finger Lakes of New York State gone from holding a simple award breakfast to building innovative and leading-edge features that distinguish it among its peer programs? By Canandaigua ATHENA’s four main accomplishments: recognizing outstanding women from the Canandaigua area for their contributions and achievements; raising significant dollars for women’s scholarships; mentoring and coaching partnerships with area colleges; and having international ties through ATHENA International, a foundation that has honored many women known throughout the world for their achievements in world politics, medicine, education, business and more. The 2010 ATHENA Awards program will showcase and honor the accomplishments of ATHENA nominees in the greater Canandaigua area.

The Canandaigua ATHENA program is expanding this year by adding the Canandaigua ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award, the second ATHENA program in the state to offer this award. Nominations for this award are accepted for an emerging woman leader, 40 years of age or younger, who demonstrates excellence, creativity and initiative in her business or profession, provides valuable service to improve the quality of life for others in her community, and clearly serves as a role model for young women both personally and professionally.

ATHENA nominees are also being sought and the nomination process is simple. Qualified candidates in the greater Canandaigua area will have attained significant achievement in business and service to the community, and will have contributed to the advancement of women.
The high energy farce, which won a 2008 Tony Award , is set in the ‘mod’ 1960′s in Paris where Bernard, a swinging American bachelor, is juggling three gorgeous airline stewardess fiancees—always keeping only one on the ground and the other two in the air. When schedules change, things get a bit turbulent as all three beauties arrive at his bachelor pad on the same night. Bernard must go into his own riotous version of ‘air traffic control’–with the help of his acerbic French housekeeper and a visiting college pal.

“It’s utter mayhem, with a different girl behind every door!” said Karin Bowersock, Bristol Valley’s Artistic Director, “I remember the 1960′s film version starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis—and the stage version is just as fun.”

The production will be directed by Dominic Orlando, who has directed past BVT comedies, Lend Me a Tenor, Rough Crossing and Red Herring. The cast, largely guest artists from New York City, includes Patrick White as Bernard, Suzi Takahashi, Katelyn Machnica and Katie Rose Reynolds as the stewardesses, Tommy Labanaris as the hapless college pal and Michelle Doucet as the long-suffering housekeeper. The production is sponsored by Mitchell-Joseph Insurance and The Renaissance/Goodie II Shoppe.

Performances run from July 22 through August 1 at the theater at 151 S. Main Street in Naples. For reservations and further information, call the box office at 585 374-6318 or visit http://www.bvtnaples.org

Performances times are Thursday – Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 2 (first week) and Wednesday at 2, Thursday at 2 and 8, Friday and Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 2 (second week). Tickets range in price from $10 – $30.

The Bristol Valley Theater all-comedy summer season continues through August with Treasure Island and Murderers. The season is sponsored by Constellation Brands with additional support from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

NAPLES, NY (JUNE 2010)

Bristol Valley Theater, the central Finger Lakes live professional theater continues their all comedy 2010 summer season with Red White and Tuna by Joe Sears, Jaston Williams and Ed Howard, starting June 24 at the theater in Naples and running through July 4.

The comedy, third in a hilarious and crowd-pleasing series which also includes Greater Tuna and Tuna Christmas, chronicles the lives and loves of the humble inhabitants of the third smallest town in the lone star state, Tuna, Texas. In this installment, the good people of Tuna are preparing for the Tuna High School Reunion and 4th of July celebration. There’ll be beauty pageants, UFO sightings, an exhibit of road-kill sculptures, and of course, award winning potato salad!
“What makes this play so hysterical is not just the loveable, laughable characters, but also the entire population of Tuna—men women, pets and aliens– will be played by just two actors!” said Karin Bowersock, Artistic Director, “Half the fun is in the quick changes!”

The production will be directed by David Shane, with actors Tommy Labanaris and Vincent DiGeronimo, both from New York City, making the split second costume changes to bring the entire town to life. The production is sponsored by The Naples Record, WCGR Radio, and Clark CSM.

“No funnier place to celebrate the 4th—and summer in general– than Tuna!” said Bowersock.

Performances run from June 24 through July 4 at the theater at 151 S. Main Street in Naples. For reservations and further information, call the box office at 585 374-6318 or visit www.bvtnaples.org

This new exclusive exhibit combines the beauty of religion and art together for a never before seen spectacle.

Local art and mixed media artifacts will be shown in Art of our Faiths, a show that features a collection of art from Rochester, Canandaigua, and the Finger Lakes area. The show runs daily at the First Congregational Church through Sunday June 13th.

Churches have long been known as architectural mavericks, filled with history, design, and integrity. No matter what denomination, each church satisfies a spiritual need that is only fueled by the art that is displayed. Having an art show that captures the magic and mystery of faith is not only moving, but also uplifting to so many, bringing a spectrum of world wide inspiration.

“The idea hit me at once,” John Paul, Chair and Art Acquisition of the program says. “There are many famous artists in the area whose works are in museums and shows worldwide. Some are not totally religious, but connected spiritually.”

To have a thematic collection of this virtue all together one would usually have to travel quite a distance, luckily the show is convenient to Rochester art goers and Finger Lakes art enthusiasts.

Originally titled Art of our Churches, it’s been renamed Art of our Faiths to capture a wider audience. This also allowed some exquisite pieces to be displayed from the homes of private art collectors in the Rochester area. In addition to area churches, much of the art in the exhibit are spiritually based, coming from prestigious social action programs and organizations such as Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Temple B’rith Kodesh, Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence (University of Rochester), and the Women’s Interfaith Institute.

Others artists include Christine Henehan, Nancy Beikirch, with promotional photography by George Wallace. There is also a raffle to win an etching from famed artist Nancy Beikirch, who uses the technique called Aquatint, a form of Intaglio printing where impressions are produced from an inked metal plate.

Art of our Faiths is showing daily through Sunday, June 13th at the First Congregational Church at 58 North Main Street, Canandaigua New York. Admission is $10 at the door and $8 for seniors 62 and older, tickets available at the door and area Wegmans.
